The Wine:
In the glass, this is a translucent ruby with a violet edge. The nose is immediate and lovely: wild black cherry, fresh raspberry, and violet lead, followed by cracked black pepper and dried herbs — lavender and wild sage — with a whisper of plum deepening in the background.
The palate is where this wine earns its keep. The acidity is bright and precise, the tannins fine-grained and present but never overly-grippy, and the finish has a mineral salinity — iron and wet stone — that keeps you coming back. Give it twenty minutes in the glass before you commit to an opinion: the dried rose and forest floor notes that emerge as it opens are the best thing about it. This is not a wine that needs age, but it will reward two to four years in a good cellar.
